History of the 82d Signal Battalion
and its involvement in Post Cold War operations.
In August 1992, the battalion deployed a Company Task
Force in support of 2nd Brigade to South Florida to assist with Hurricane
Andrew relief operations. For more than 30 days, Signal Battalion troopers
helped to provide food, shelter, and medical assistance to the people
of South Florida.
On 18 September 1994, over 30 C130s took off from Pope Air Force Base
enroute to Haiti. The "All Americans" were about to conduct
the largest parachute assault since Operation Market Garden during World
War II. The battalion, under the command of LTC Van Patten, had Single
Channel TACSAT operators and Assault Communications Platoon radio operators
cross-loaded onboard the C-130s. The battalion also provided enroute
communications for the Task Force Commander, MG Mike Steele. Approximately
one hour from the objective area, the invasion was aborted after Haitian
authorities discovered that the 82d Airborne Division was on the way.
It was through the battalion's enroute communications that the word was
received to abort the mission. The Division had accomplished its mission
without firing a shot.
